The Garter Toss And Why You Should Add It To Your Wedding Day
A wedding is a celebration of two people becoming one and sharing that love with the people you both love the most.
A great way to share that love is by incorporating the garter toss into your reception.
The Garter toss is a special way to invite your guests to participate in your wedding. Even though the wedding day
really is all about the bride and the groom, your guests want to feel like they played a part in your celebration as
well. Allowing your guest to see your groom take off your garter is exciting, sexy and fun! You are married now and
that’s a big part of what a marriage should be. Besides the “kiss” this may be the only time they see this part of your
marriage.
Then it heats up even more with excitement when your two “single” guests get together and the man places the
garter on the woman. Everyone loves it and everyone blushes because it’s pure fun!
Below I have answered some of the many questions that brides are asking about the wedding garters. I hope this
helps you enjoy your garters and most importantly your wedding day! Relax and let the fun begin.
What should my wedding garter look like?
There are so many garter styles to choose from which is why our collection of garters continues to grow. You can
have your garters match your wedding theme or wedding colors or you can surprise your groom with a garter to his
liking such as sports, camouflage or if he is a police officer or in the army or military! Trust me this works like a
charm. It’s also a great way of reminding your groom that you had him in mind while planning the wedding. Having a
garter is truly exciting because it’s a wonderful way to add a very personal touch.
Is it okay to have my wedding garters be my “something blue”?
Yes! A lot of brides choose this too. It's a great way to incorporate your something blue into your wedding. You can
choose one of our blue garters or you can ask for a small blue bow to be added to the inside of your garter.
We also can hide a special blue heart (like the one shown in our Minnie mouse wedding garter http://www.
gartersbygingersnap.com/images/MinnieMmouseK1.jpg) to the inside of your keepsake garter that no one will see
but you.
How do I know what size wedding garter I should wear?
To get your leg size, use a tape measure and measure approximately 3 inches above the knee, or in the place where
the garter will be worn. If you don't have a cloth tape measure, a string or ribbon can be used. Put it around the area
where the garter will be worn and cut where the two ends meet. Lay the string or ribbon flat on a ruler for the
measurement. Rounding up is not recommended.
Is it okay to wear a wedding garter with a secret hideaway?
Absolutely! This is a great way to be discreet about having a sip of your favorite drink during your wedding reception
without getting carried away. A lot of times the fun goes on around you and you barely have a second to have a
glass of wine or a taste of your favorite drink. When you find time to sneak away, sneak a sip as well. But please
remember that you may NOT want to have too much to drink because you want to remember your special day!
A hideaway is also great for carrying around your lipstick or lip gloss as well. Lipstick wears away fast with all the
talking and kissing during your wedding.
A lot of brides choose to bring a purse to carry their necessities but remember, once the excitement really begins and
you are mingling with your guests you probably won’t make it back to your purse to get your lipstick or lip gloss thus
allowing yourself to be photographed without anything on your lips.
Having a garter that holds it allows you to slip away and apply a quick application without your guests even knowing.

What leg do I wear my wedding garter on?
There is no particular leg which that garter should be worn. It is best to wear it on the leg that you feel most
comfortable. Also, you should let your groom know ahead of time which leg you chose or guide him to the leg by
slightly lifting the chosen leg off of the floor when it is time for the garter removal.
When trying to decide which leg you wear the garters you should take into consideration any marking such as a scar,
tattoo, birthmark or bruise that you do not want your guest to see or do not want captured in your wedding photos.
What if I am wearing a keepsake and a toss garter?
If you are wearing a keepsake and a toss garter, it is okay to wear them together and again what ever leg feels most
comfortable for you is fine.
You should put the keepsake on your leg first and then the toss garter. That way the toss garter will be the one that
the groom takes off. It is also okay if you choose to wear one on each leg.
Some brides think that it will be uncomfortable to wear both garters for most of the wedding time but once the
excitement begins you will most likely forget that you are even wearing a garter. If you find yourself feeling
uncomfortable about wearing the garters throughout your wedding day, then slip away maybe with your maid of
honor and remove the garter. You can slip the garter back on just before it’s time for the garter removal, which is
usually just after the cutting of the cake.
How high up should I wear the wedding garters?
The garter is usually worn approximately 3” above the knee. Remember that the farther up you place your garters
the farther up your groom has to go to remove it.
Which garter is the toss garter?
The toss garter is traditionally the smaller sized garter. It may look more like a band and be less frilly. This is the
garter that will be tossed to the single men attending your wedding. As a rule you do not receive the toss garter back
because the guest should keep it.
Honestly, it is the bride’s preference about which garter she wants to give away and which garter she would like to
keep for herself and her husband.
Which garter is the keepsake garter?
The keepsake garter is traditionally the larger sized garter. It may have more ruffles and look less like a band. This
is the garter that you will keep for yourself and for your husband. Some brides like to wear it on their honeymoon as
well. But again, it is your preference on which garter you choose to keep and which garter you choose to toss.
Who is responsible for buying the wedding garter?
Normally the bride chooses the wedding garters she likes mainly because the bride is the one that plans the wedding
but anyone can buy the garters. The garters can also be purchased by the groom, the mother of the bride, the
groom’s mother, the bridesmaids or many times the maid of honor gives the garters as a gift at the bridal shower.
Is there an alternative to wearing a wedding garter?
Certainly! If you choose not to wear a wedding garter yourself, the new and trendy thing to do is to buy personalized
garters for your bridesmaids. You can buy matching ones or even allow them to choose their own special garter. It’s
a wonderful and unique way of saying thank you for being part of my special day. You can present the garter gifts at
your bridal shower or your rehearsal dinner. Your girls will love the surprise and it will build even more excitement
about what will come next for your big day!
If you buy them for your bridesmaids it is still okay for you to wear one as well if you change your mind, which is not
uncommon when planning a wedding! :)
